No prelim ratings jump for "The Amazing Race 13" finale

"The Amazing Race 13" did not receive a major ratings jump upward for its final episode, drawing a preliminary 3.1 Nielsen rating in the key 18-49 age group. Apprximately 10.6 million overall viewers watched the TAR13 closer.

The preliminary numbers place the TAR13 finale squarely near the averages for a typical "Amazing Race 13" episode, above most other weeks without a major football overrun but below TAR13's earlier season highs. Obviously, the fact that "The Amazing Race 13" finale fell in the week without a national football overrun tended to hold back the ratings. The usual extra boost of viewers watching TAR to weait for "Cold Case" didn't occur either since "Cold Case" was preempted.

----

More importantly, "The Amazing Race" is unique among reality shows in that it doesn't draw a major audience of casual viewers. The finales of shows like "Survivor" and "The (Celebrity) Apprentice" are considered special promotional events by such off an on television watchers, drawing in viewers who haven't watched every episode.

To appreciate an "Amazing Race" finale though, one generally has to have already followed the racers and storylines. If you don't already know what happened in previous episodes, the finale just doesn't have any relevance. In that sense, the ratings pattern is more like that of an episodic drama like "24".

For what it is worth, I do expect a slight adjustment upward in the 18-49 demo number when the final rating is announced. While there wasn't a national CBS football overrun, some areas like New York did have local games of interest that pushed TAR13's closing mimutes into the Hallmark movie spot. When that factor is taken into account, "The Amazing Race 13" finale numbers should come off somewhat better.

TAR 13.11 recaplette: Nick & Starr win "The Amazing Race 13"

My live blog of "The Amazing Race 13" finale covered the play-by-play, the recaplette will be more on the overarching thoughts of the episodes. Very simply, the final outcome of "The Amazing Race 13" was a triumph of skill over storyline, skill over sentimentality and skill over superbad.

Brother & sister Nick and Starr didn't have the compelling life story, the marriage on the edge or a Cinderella underdog dream. They weren't the heroes avoiding the low road for a higher purpose. Nick and Starr willingly used such tactics without apology in the name of competition.

The undeniable fact though was that Nick and Starr were simply the most skilled, most effective on this run of "The Amazing Race" by a wide margin. Reduced purely to a competition without any of the higher meaning that those of us on the outside attach to it, Nick and Starr were just better racers than everyone else.

Nick and Starr did better departing Portland airport, better on the tree climbing & log traversing Detour, better on the flashback picture puzzle challenge, better finding destinations downtown. However much bad taxi luck may have tried to intervene, pure undiluted skill finally won out.

It wasn't pretty. Nick and Starr took paths that I wouldn't ever want to take as a racer. But bottom line.... they won in convincing fashion. There's no way that the rest of us will ever be able to dismiss their victory.

----

As for separated spouses Ken and Tina, I will be very curious to see if Ken's public show of marriage reconciliation will be backed up now months in real time following the taping of the race finish.

However much Ken and Tina may have professed a desire for reconciliation, there was still an inordinate amount of tension and disconnection even in the final race leg with a million dollars on the line. When Tina was struggling with her fear of heights on the Detour, it seemed as though she still couldn't look to her husband for support.

They gave a good faith effort on the final leg and owe no apologies for their second place result. It just seems that if their marriage is to truly be revived, the race may only serve as the beginning of that process.

----

Andrew and Dan were quickly played out as non-factors on the final race leg, reduced to a B-story sitcom story with their taxi driver. They had no business being on the final leg but fluke eliminations on top of fluke eliminations allowed Andrew and Dan to survive. Fair enough, those were the rules.

For Andrew and Dan to have actually won "The Amazing Race 13" though would have one tipping point too far. That's not meant as a criticism of Andrew and Dan as people, far from it. They seem very likable sorts. But a victory by Andrew and Dan would have symbolized not the triumph of skill but its absolute meaninglessness. At that point, "The Amazing Race" would have been turned into a parody of itself.

For this final episode of "The Amazing Race 13" though, it would stay about the skills.
